The 10 best saunas in Istanbul (2026)
Sweating in Istanbul starts with the historic hammam: the heated marble slab, the scrub, the foam. For a Finnish sauna and a cold plunge there are a few addresses too. These are the places we would send a friend to, and each entry says whether the format is a hammam or a sauna.

How to use this shortlist
This is a researched shortlist, not a record of visits or an independently measured ranking. Entries include dry saunas, steam baths and spa alternatives; their tags describe the format. Venue order is an editorial selection, not a score based on measured heat. Where we have checked a current operator source, the facts, source and consultation date appear below the listing. Other descriptions come from the local guide and still need a fresh venue check. Confirm opening, access and prices before travelling. Nobody paid for inclusion.
Saunas and hammams in Istanbul: booking questions
How much does a hammam or sauna cost in Istanbul?
The historic hammams price their rituals in euros or lira: at Hürrem Sultan the 45-minute Pir-ü Pak is 110 €, at Cağaloğlu the 45-minute Istanbul Dream 95 €, at Süleymaniye 90 € per person. Kılıç Ali Paşa's traditional ritual is 4,700 TL and plain entry at Çemberlitaş 3,200 TL with no time limit. Hotel spa packages with hammam and sauna start around 45 €. Prices change often; check the official page before booking.
What do you wear in a hammam, and how do the women's and men's hours work?
Hammams provide a peştemal (a cotton wrap), a towel and slippers; you wear the peştemal over underwear or swimwear. Single-dome hammams such as Kılıç Ali Paşa split the day between women (8 am to 4 pm) and men (4:45 pm to 11:30 pm); Zeyrek Çinili and Cağaloğlu have separate sections. Süleymaniye is a mixed hammam for couples and families, with male attendants. In hotel spas the sauna and pool are mixed and swimwear is required.
How do I do a hammam or sauna session?
In a hammam, warm up and sweat on the heated marble slab for 15 to 30 minutes, then come the scrub and the foam massage, then you rest with tea in the cool room; plan 45 to 105 minutes in total. In a sauna, stay 10 to 15 minutes, cool down for a few minutes (cold shower or cold plunge), rest and repeat two or three rounds. Drink water between rounds and leave if you feel dizzy.
Where can I find a Finnish sauna or a cold plunge in Istanbul?
Most historic hammams have no sauna. For a Finnish sauna, an ice fountain and a cold plunge, look at hotel spas such as Aliée Well+ on the Golden Horn; Pera Hammam Spa pairs its hammam with a sauna and steam room and a pool. Always ask hotel spas about day-guest access and conditions before travelling.
